In recent years, there have been important changes in antimicrobial therapy. New antimicrobials are available and a greater database of species-specific pharmacokinetic information is available, allowing for more accurate dosing with drugs. Antimicrobial drugs are the most widely prescribed and administered drugs in veterinary medicine. Unfortunately, they are not always used appropriately. In a review of antimicrobial therapy in 97 dogs at a veterinary hospital, 42 dogs had been treated irrationally (no indication, wrong drug, inappropriate dosage) (1). Prophylactic antimicrobial use accounted for 90% of the irrational treatment, and 69% of the irrational treatment was attributable to inappropriate dosage regimens. Consumer concerns over drug residues in food animals and the development of widespread bacterial resistance to antimicrobials further emphasizes the importance of rational antimicrobial therapy. Recurrent diarrhea associated with enterotoxigenic Clostridium perfringens in 2 dogs.
Two dogs were diagnosed with enterotoxigenic Clostridium perfringens-associated diarrhea. Diarrhea was responsive to antimicrobial therapy, but recurred after treatment was ceased. Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin was present in feces during diarrheic episodes but not when feces were normal. Both dogs responded to a prolonged course of oral cephalexin and dietary modification.

A 2-year-old, 210-kg, Duroc boar manifested with a grade II-III left front lameness. The boar was treated systemically with isolfupredone acetate and a 5-week course of ketoprofen. The lameness resolved and the ketoprofen was discontinued; however, the lameness returned and the boar was euthanized humanely. Postmortem examination was consistent with osteochondrosis dessicans.
